Antoni Mazur

Antoni Mazur is one of the most significant Polish carvers, and is still working in a limited way at the age of 92. He was born and continues to reside in the southern village of Zanoja, located in the Beskidy Mountains. His work has been widely shown throughout Poland and Europe—especially Germany—where he is sought after by collectors. Last year he was exhibited in five shows, and his works were used as illustrations in “Calendar 2000.” Mazur's work is also featured in a catalogue from the exhibition at Bielsko Bialej.

Mazur is stylistically noted for his crude, primitive approach to carving, reflective of the manner typical of Polish carvers more than 100 years ago. Though his works are often biblically inspired, mountain life and traditions are also used as motifs. Events such as weddings, town gatherings and farm-life seem as important to him as religious matters. Mazur will leave a legacy in his artwork as well as in his family. He has five children, fifteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
