Haitian Art
Haiti, the poorest country in the western world, has found its greatest natural resource in the creativity
of its people! Haitian art, through its color and vivid imagery, is a reflection of Haitian folklore and the
Voodoo religion. Relying on their faith in Voodoo, Haitian artists have turned the problems of their nation
into inspiration. The incredible ingenuity of the Haitian people is evidenced in every sculpture made from
an old oil drum and in every painting rendered on an old scrap of cloth. Collected, exhibited, and written
about all over the western world, Haitian art, in all of its diversity, continues to be an expression of the vivid humanity and mystery of the Haitian people.

"The work of Haitian self-taught artists portrays the whole kaleidoscope of Haitian life and spirit with an unprecedented openness and honesty."  -Ute Stebich
