Rosa Elena Curruchich

The Curruchich family, from the Kaqchikel indigenous group, are principal figures in the world of Comalapan art. The work of a number of family memebers is included in a book entitled “Art Naif de Guatemala.” Rosa Elena Curruchich is the granddaughter of Andres Curruchich, a world renowned indigenous Maya painter from Comalapa, Guatemala.

Self-taught and working only in oil, Rosa Elena had her first one-woman show at Aliansa Fransesa in Guatemala in the late 1970s. It sold out before it even opened, and received rave reviews in the local press. She returned to her village, however, and was beaten by villagers jealous of her success. Today she paints in secret, in fear for her life. Her works are collected by a small group of loyal fans who recognize her style as being one of the few original indigenous voices in all of Guatemala. Rosa Elena depicts village traditions and customs, many of which no longer exist, that she remembers in childhood.
