Cuban Art
In the past, Cuban artists have been largely unrecognized. They are now gaining in popularity and receiving more coverage and visibility. Cuban art is very diverse, ranging from modern installation and performance pieces to traditional styles. Much of Cuban art is self-taught and features subjects such as religion, genre scenes of daily life, historical themes, and the surreal. Artists may be influenced by what art they have seen, but their work reflects their unique Cuban experience. Despite the limitations put on them by a Communist government, poverty, and other factors, the Cuban people have an unquenchable spirit that is conveyed by their joyful, colorful art. In 1991, the U.S. exempted art from the trade embargo, so Galerie Bonheur is able to acquire art legally from Cuba.
