Jose Antonio da Silva
Jose Antonio da Silva was born in 1909 in Sales Oliveira, Brazil. Although he worked on the family ranch, from an early age he showed a predisposition to drawing. His pictures were first shown in 1946, at a regional exhibition in the Casa de Cultura de São José do Rio Preto (Culture House of Jose of the Black River). Art critics fell in love with his art, and one of his paintings was chosen to be in the Domus Gallery of São Paulo. Da Silva then moved to São Paulo, where he took up painting as a career. He is considered one of the most important Brazilian painters. In 1980, Museu Municipal de Arte Primitiva José Antônio da Silva (Municipal Museum of the Primitiva Art of Jose Antonio da Silva) was founded. Da Silva died in São Paulo in 1996. His art is still admired for the bright colors and the expressive form of the figures.
