JUSTIN McCARTHY

Justin McCarthy (1891-1977) of Pennsylvania, an eccentric character, painted a fast-moving, developing nation in the early twentieth century, and his brush moved with equal energy and drive. He painted practically every theme and tried many media, but ladies were his favorite subjects. Too shy for courtship in real life, women were admired, adored, flirted and fought with through his art. The sureness of his style, elegant design, intense line and exaggerated drawing reveal an artist whose understanding of composition was intuitive and brilliant. His refreshing spontaneity and use of vibrant, luxurious color total a body of work which looks crude, but is in fact elegant, seems naïve, yet is highly sophisticated.
