Esperanza Espinoza
Born in 1956 on the island of Solentiname, Nicaragua, Espinoza grew up surrounded by nature in a place where electricity was unknown and lush vegetation, wild birds, and animals were abundant.
As an adolescent, Espinoza moved to the city of Managua. Her paintings reflect both sides of her life experiences. The urban paintings show the social and economic condition of a sub-society: the garbage dumps, multi-family homes, outcasts' shelters, markets and festivals with vibrancy of color, innocence of form, and a predilection to depict the texture of life itself. Her landscapes, in contrast, evoke the serene life of her childhood, dreamlike, graceful compositions of a “lost paradise.”
Espinoza is totally self-taught and has painted since her adolescence. She currently lives in Managua, Nicaragua, where she raised her family. Since 1983 she has shown her works in Europe, the U.S., Mexico, and Latin America. She has had more than fifteen solo and group exhibitions in museums around the globe.
