Rafael Morla
Rafael Morla is from La Romana, a small town in the Dominican Republic. He lives there with his wife, 9 children, and 28 grandchildren. Rafael has had no training or formal schooling in his lifetime. He carves wood into fabulous and colorful artworks, and paints these in bright and happy colors. He loves especially to carve images of the outdoors and nature, particularly trees of all kinds, animals, birds, sea creatures and the like.
His trees are magical and exotic, most of them being local trees and plants from the Caribbean island where Rafael and his family have lived all their lives. The birds, fish, and other tropical animals are images of what this talented artist sees around him every day. Rafael's palette is brilliant and cheerful with colors that reflect the sunshine and tropical feeling of his island home.
Rafael is well- known in his own country and his artwork is in high demand there among collectors, architects, hotel decorators and interior designers etc. Although his work sells extremely well, he usually shares most of the money he receives for his art with his large and extended family and the community in which he lives. As a result of this generosity and wonderful human spirit, Rafael and his family live a simple life in their primitive home in La Romana. His happiness and goodness shines through in all of his artwork, and brightens up the day of anyone who happens to be fortunate enough to view or purchase these unique and marvelous creations.
Rafael Morla's artwork has been exhibited in various art galleries, museums, hotels, and art exhibits throughout the United States and the Caribbean. His work was featured in 2003 at the Missouri Botanical Garden exhibit of Latin American Folk Art, and was written up in the Vail, Colorado newspaper on July 4th , 2003 on the front page of the Arts and Entertainment Section, as the most interesting artist included in a show at one of Vail's prestigious galleries.
